How to Choose the Right Golf Ball for You!

Finding the right golf ball is essential for maximizing your performance on the course. With the myriad of options available, it can be overwhelming to select the ball that perfectly complements your playing style and preferences. This article presents a step-by-step testing process to help you find the ideal golf ball that enhances your game and provides consistency throughout your rounds.

Step 1: Putter Test - Feel and Sound

The first stage of our testing process involves evaluating the feel and sound of different golf balls on the putting green. Gather a selection of balls you're interested in trying out and start hitting putts from various distances. Pay close attention to how each ball feels off the putter face and the sound it produces upon impact. If it feels and sounds like hitting a brick, it’s too hard; eliminate it! If it’s like hitting a marshmallow, it’s too soft. Keep the balls that feel good and sound good, and head to the chipping green.

Step 2: Chipping Test - Short Game Performance

For the second part of our testing process, focusing on short game performance. Experiment with different types of chips, including high shots, low shots, running shots, and stopping shots. As you chip with each ball, evaluate the feel, sound, and the amount of spin generated. Eliminate balls that feel clunky or lack the necessary spin control. If a ball happens to be too soft and spin too much, eliminate that, too. Although that is less likely. Keep the remaining balls, and let’s get into pitching.

Step 3: Pitching Test - Mid-range Wedge Shots

Next, find a location where you can hit pitch shots to a green for the pitching test. Do this on the course if it’s quiet and you’re not holding anyone up. Test each ball by hitting a variety of shots from 20 to 80 yards. Pay attention to the feel, sound, and spin characteristics of each ball. Does the ball land a release too much? Does it land and spin back too far? Finding a ball with the right balance of spin and distance control is crucial for getting the ball in tight and having a chance to convert the putt. Keep the balls that made the cut, and move on to the next test.

Step 4: 7-Iron Test - Approach Performance

It’s now time for the 7-iron test. Once again, if it is possible to do this on the course, do so while not holding up play. You should only be down to a few choices and might need to run this test over a few holes so you are not hitting a bunch of balls on the same hole (unless it is super quiet). Again, with each shot, consider the feel, sound, spin, and distance. As you complete this stage, you should be down to two choices.

Step 5: Driver Test - Off the Tee

The final stage of testing involves evaluating the two remaining balls with the driver. Focus on feel, sound, spin, and distance off the tee. Now, you should have the winning ball!

The Wrap-Up

Selecting the perfect golf ball is a crucial aspect of consistency. The random balls from the lake, or cheapos on sale will only get you so far. By following this testing process, you can identify the ball that best suits your game. Invest the time and effort into finding the ideal golf ball! Your game will thank you for it!
