Ladder Drill

Chipping Distance Control

Ladder drill is a staple chipping drill that should become part of your regular practice. It might seem difficult at first, but you need to master this drill!

Equipment Needed

  • 10+ Golf Balls.

  • 4 Alignment Sticks (or clubs you aren’t using).

The Set Up

  • Head to the chipping green (you can also do this in the backyard without chipping to an actual green).

  • Place your balls at the starting point (START), which is 2-yards from the edge of the green.

  • Place the first alignment stick (clubs not being used can be substituted) onto the green 2-yards from the edge of the green (A).

  • Place the remaining alignment sticks (B-D) on the green spaced at 1-yard increments.

How to Score

1. You must land three balls in a row in zone-1 (A-B). If your ball lands on alignment stick (A) or (B), it counts. Note: Your ball will not say in the zone.

2. Next, you must land three balls in a row in zone-2 (B-C). If you miss, repeat from the same level.

3. Then, you must land three balls in a row in zone-3 (C-D). If you miss, repeat from the same level.

4. Finally, it’s time to climb up and down the ladder by landing a ball in each zone without missing (zone-1, zone- 2, zone-3, zone-2, zone-1). If you miss the intended target, start this section again at zone-1.

5. Try and complete with three alternating clubs—for example, 56°, PW, and 8 iron.

Be sure to use your pre-shot routine on each putt. Remember, “Practice like you play, Practice like a champion, Play like a champion!”
