Payne Stewart Drill
Scrambling
The story goes that in preparation for the US Open, Payne Stewart would chip to a hand towel to improve his distance control accuracy. I came up with this game in his honor.
Equipment Needed
4 Golf Balls
1 Hand Towel
The Set Up
Find a hole where there is approximately 20-feet from the front of the green to the hole.
Place your four balls at the start position (A), which is 2-yards from the edge of the green.
How to Score
1. Place a damp hand towel on the green where you intend to land your ball.
2. Chip all four balls onto the green, then putt them out. (Try and land the ball as close to the towel as possible. There is no penalty for missing the towel). Change the towel position or club at any time to land at the towel and finish by the hole.
3. To move to the next tee (B), you must finish out all four balls in a total of 9 or less (3 out of 4 up and down).
4. (A-E) are spaced at 2-yard intervals.
NOTE: Dampening the towel minimizes wind movement on the towel. Ensure that you lay it flat to avoid unusual bounces as much as possible.
Be sure to use your pre-shot routine on each putt. Remember, “Practice like you play, Practice like a champion, Play like a champion!”
