Chipping LLC

The Process!

"Chipping LLC" is an acronym I use to explain the chipping process from around the green.

This is a process that should be implemented on every chip, without a club in hand, and begins when you arrive at your ball and ends once you strike your chip shot.

L-L-C = L. Lie + L. Landing Target + C. Club Selection

Step One: L = Lie (Assessment)

The first part of the process is to assess the lie. Is it a fairway lie? Rough? Sitting up or down? Is the ground dry and hard, or soft and wet? Is there grain?

Information about the lie can be gathered in seconds and helps you understand what your options are. The better the lie, the more options you have.

Step Two: L = Landing Target

The second part of the process is to determine the best landing area. Does the shot call for you to land the ball on or off the green?

Are there any slopes you need to avoid, like a false front, mounds, or other undulations that might affect where you want to land the ball? Will your ball be landing on an upslope, downslope, side slope, or combination of slopes of level ground?

What is the firmness of the ground where you want to land the ball? Is it firm or soft? Testing the ground by touching it with your hand or banging it with your club is not legal. But nothing is stopping you from paying attention to the ground under your feet as you walk on it.

You must also take into account the break of the green. Your job is the hit the landing area! Be sure to check out my Skill Training ebook on Chipping and complete the Ladder Drill

Step Three: C = Club Selection

The third and final part of the process is to choose the club that will hit your landing area and finish as close to the hole as possible based on the information gathered during steps one and two.

Additionally, you need to take into account the speed of the green. If you have gone through the process correctly, your only job is to execute the shot at hand. If you have done your skill training homework with drills like "Ladder Drill" and "Land and Roll," your chances of executing with the correct club will be much higher.

While it might seem like there is a lot to this process, remember that it is a process with only three steps. The more you do it, the faster and better you'll get at it, and much of the process will eventually become subconscious and completed in less than one minute from start to finish.

Remember, the process begins without a club in hand. If you choose the club first, it will tell you where you have to land the ball. You need to make that decision.
