The “Putt-Chip”

My Secret Weapon!

I call this shot my secret weapon. It’s not such a secret these days, but it is a weapon!

Think putt with a chipping club.

The Set Up:

1. Feet close together (like the chip & run)
2. Weight 50/50
3. Ball position middle
4. Conventional putting grip
5. Eyes over the ball like a putt
6. Putting stroke with a faster tempo

The most used clubs on this shot are Pitching Wedge, 9-iron, 8-iron, and 7-iron. You can play this shot with less lofted clubs as well. Stay away from anything more lofted than Pitching Wedge.

The club doesn't strike the ground like a regular chip. It lightly brushes the top of the grass so the leading edge stays low without digging into the ground.

Important things to notice:

1. Standing close to the ball
2. Shaft and forearms in alignment
3. Heel of the club is off the ground
4. Body alignment is square
5. Gripping down with trail hand on the shaft

This is such a consistent way to chip. It’s very forgiving! The ball almost comes off the same no matter how you strike it; soft, dead, then rolls like a putt.
