The “Chip-Stick” Drill
The “Standard Chip”, aka the chip and run.
Get ready to give up the title of “Burger Flipper!”
1. Set up.
Start by taking your set up while holding onto an alignment stick which acts as an extension of the shaft.
You might have a little more forward shaft lean than normal to accommodate the length of the alignment stick, which will be on the lead side of your body.
2. Backswing.
As you swing back, the top section of the alignment stick will come away from your body.
This is a result of a little bit of wrist hinge. Make sure you are using your shoulders and not just your hands and arms.
3. Impact.
Don’t let the alignment stick whack the side of your body!
Side note: This drill is specifically for “flippers,” and in terms of chipping, this drill provides an exaggerated feel of not allowing the wrists to break.
4. Finish.
Take a second to hold your finish and evaluate.
Notice that the alignment stick is still visible outside the lead arm.
FYI, the alignment stick might feel a little uncomfortable in your hands. There are some training aids you can use that are specifically for this purpose.
