Lead Hand Placement

The “Standard Chip”, aka the chip and run.

There are some shots where we do modify our grip. Chipping is one of them.

For the standard chip and run, keep the grip more in the palm and a more neutral grip.

Correct: Grip in palm.

When playing the standard chip and run, minimal wrist hinge is required.

As a result, it is more beneficial to grip the club more in the palm of the lead hand.

Incorrect: Grip in fingers.

Avoid having the handle too much in the fingers on a standard chip.

This is the opposite of the full swing, where we want to grip in the fingers. Gripping in the fingers allows you to hinge your wrists, which is not necessary in the standard chip-and-run.

Too much wrist hinge can make distance control more challenging. It can also promote too much forward shaft lean at impact on this particular shot, causing the leading edge to dig into the ground.

Lead Hand Placement

  • Handle in the palm of your lead hand.

  • Handle too much in the fingers.
