Lead Hand Errors

Issues created by lead hand placement errors

I never change the grip just to change the grip or make it look a certain way. The swing is cause and effect.

I change the grip if it creates wrist hinge issues or club face issues.

The one thing about any grip change, it feels awful and awkward at first.

Incorrect: No wrist hinge.

Wrists are unable to hinge up and down as a result of the grip in the palm of the hand.

Hinge on the backswing turns into lag on the downswing. If you have minimal wrist hinge on the backswing and you early release, check to see if you are gripping in the fingers or the palm!

Correct: Wrist Hinge.

Wrists can hinge with the grip in the fingers like swinging a hammer.

Videoing your swing from the face on view will give you the best perspective for analyzing wrist hinge. Look at your hinge when your lead arm is parallel to the ground.

Common Error - Hinge

  • No Hinge - Grip in Palm

    1. Possible open club face/possible slice
    2. Lack of power/compression
    3. Minimal lag/early release
    4. Fat and thin contact

  • Hinge - Grip in Fingers

This is a position often referred to the "L" position, where the lead arm and shaft create the letter "L".
